first we made
all-natural dog treats.....
We started
the canine cookery
in a semi-rural area north of New Orleans, arrived at by a 24-mile
toll bridge that transports people into another way of life, if not
another century, by forking over a few dollars and driving a
while.

When we started taking fresh-baked dog cookies to the Covington
Farmers Market in '97, we were just about laughed out of the place.
It helped to have thick skin, developed in the heat of deep-South
summers, but we paid steep dues for introducing such "frivolous"
products into such a provincial arena: "Dog cookies? You're joking!"
We had a mission, though, to show customers that good, fresh food is
for everyone, whether 2-legged or 4-legged---or 3-legged, like one
of our favorite canine customers.
We also wanted to show that natural
foods weren't the "twigs and stems" of granola jokes.
Going organic or all-natural didn't mean giving up flavor---in fact, we found that the more natural food was, the more flavor it
likely
had.
At the market, people started giving our unconventional treats a
chance. Dogs loved them so much, they would sit by the
refrigerator at home, hoping that the next time the door opened,
they would get our delicious cookies! Read about our
commitment to keep our products preservative-free in
Beyond "Human Grade."
then came
dog birthday cakes.....
One day a nationally-known dog
bakery opened in town. Stayed almost a year-and-a-half.
The small-town rumor mill said they sold a lot of dog birthday cakes
but didn't have enough other business to continue. After they
shut down, we created
puppy party
all-natural dog cake mix to fill the "cake-void."
When we started taking our cake mix and dog birthday cakes to the
Farmers Market, first-time customers would say, "Dog cakes? You're joking!" We'd smile, knowing that their pups would beg them to come back for more.....
